CHST current projects

 

SWAP, the subject centre for social policy and social work, is one of the Higher Education Academy's 24 discipline based subject centres which aim to enhance the student learning experience by promoting high quality learning, teaching and assessment and by supporting social work and social policy educators

 

SUE-FUTURES, EPSRC funded consortium 5 year project 2004 - 2009. The FUTURES programme is concerned with research into the role of new technologies in progressing towards more sustainable urban mobility.

Virtual mobility: Implications for Accessibility, Social Inclusion and Travel - EPSRC one year Fit feasibility study, completed 2002

 

Research Mindedness for Social Work - online resources funded by Department of Health and SCIE, completed 2005 - no longer being updated

 

Child Welfare Across Borders - The development of the online course was one of a number of activities that took place within an international project entitled Child Abuse, Protection and Welfare, funded by the European Community - Canada Programme for Co-operation in Higher Education and Training. Online promotes the need for child welfare practitioners to act more effectively locally by thinking globally. 1997 - 2000

 

IMPACT: Increasing the Impact of Assistive Technology, an EU funded research project on disability and assistive technologies, involving UK, Denmark, Finland, Ireland and The Netherlands - completed 2000

Staff Biographies

 

Jackie Rafferty holds a University of Southampton Principal Research Fellowhship. She is Director the Centre for Human Service Technology (CHST) and SWAP, the Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Social Policy and Social Work. With a background in community development she has published extensively over the last 15 years in the areas of information and communication technologies and learning, teaching and practice in the human services.

 

Jan Steyaert is a faculty member at the Fontys University of Professional Education in Eindhoven (the Netherlands) and the Adjunct Professor seconded to the Centre for Human Service Technology at the University of Southampton, England. He has published widely on the application of technology in human services as well as on the dynamics between technology and social quality of society.
